Ender’s Game

Title: Ender’s Game
Author: Orson Scott Card
By: Alec J.
The I.F. (International Federation) is looking for geniuses. When they find one they send them to a kid's battle school in space to train to be commanders to defeat the buggers. When they pass this battle school they go to another battle school for older people to become commanders. The I.F. thinks Ender is the chosen one who will save mankind. Ender was brilliant and never lost in his battle school. They had him play a video game where he was commanding ships to fight the buggers. In his final battle to see if he would go to the next school he had a couple hundred ships and the buggers had a couple thousand. Ender won, then blew up the planet. Everyone around him was in joy, Ender wondered why. The battle school teacher came up to Ender and told him that it was not a video game, but that he was commanding real people. Ender defeated the buggers. Ender saved mankind.

Uglies

Title: Uglies
Author: Scott Westerfeld
Reviewer: Alud
Tally Youngblood is about to turn sixteen, and is excited. In Tally's world when a boy or girl turns sixteen, they are given an operation that turns them from "ugly" to a "pretty".
Tally befriends with a girl named Shay, who is also an "ugly". They both discover they have so much in common. They were the best of friends. Tally would always talk about someday becoming "pretty". But Shay isn't sure if she wants to become "pretty". She'd rather stay "ugly" and live in the forest. Shay told Tally that she was running away to the Smoke (a place in the forest where "uglies" runaway to live) and asks her to come with. Tally decided that she wanted to stay and have the operation. Shay was sad, hurt, and understood that Tally wouldn't go. Shay asked Tally no to tell anybody that she was going to live at the Smoke, Tally promised Shay. They both said their good-byes.

It was finally Tally's sixteenth birthday and was ready for the operation of becoming "pretty". Tally's operation did not proceed. Instead she was at Special Circumstances. Dr. Cable (a cruel beautiful "special") met with Tally and told her that they know about Shay running away to the Smoke. Tally was suprised. Dr. Cable told her that she becomes a spy for Special Circumstances to betray Shay, arrest the people living in the smoke, and have the operation, or, refuse to be their spy for Special Circumstances and stay as an "ugly" forever. Will Tally betray Shay and the people living in the Smoke, or, refuse and stay an "ugly" for the rest of her life? Read the book if you want to find out what happens next.
