Summary:
Thomas Ward is a seventh son of a seventh son. He takes on the job of being the spooks apprentice, which twenty-nine others have failed at or died trying to do. Along the way he meets a witch named Alice, who gets him into a lot of trouble. She tricks him into freeing the most dangerous witch, Mother Malkin. He learns how to capture boggarts, deal with witches, and gain courage as he defends the good people from the evils that lurk in the night. In the end he goes through many perils but manages to destroy Mother Malkin, once and for all.
